Avoid Costly Textbooks by Learning Online

One of the hidden costs of going to college is buying textbooks. When kids buy their textbooks, they often experience a nasty case of sticker shock. In a recent article found in the Missoulian, the local paper in college-town Missoula, Montana, students were interviewed about their cases of sticker shock at the university bookstore. Students were mortified when they learned that many of their textbooks cost over $100. The same article also cited the U.S. Government Accountability Office, which reported that textbook prices have tripled over the last 18 years, and that textbook prices comprise approximately 26% of the total cost of tuition and fees for a student attending a 4-year college. The figure is 72% for students attending community college.

A Psychology Education isn't Cheap

If you plan to earn your psychology degree, you'll probably have to buy textbooks for a very long period of time. To become a practicing psychologist, you will need to earn your Ph.D, which can often take longer than 7 years. You'll probably be required to take psychology courses requiring textbooks for at least six of those years. Because the average yearly cost of textbooks for students earning 4-year degrees is $898, psychology school students generally face a pretty large total textbook expense.

Save Money by Earning an Online Degree

One way to offset large educational expenses is to earn an online degree. Online schools tend to cost less than traditional colleges and universities because they have fewer overhead expenses. Online schools generally don't have to pay to maintain the classrooms, labs, libraries, and other facilities that their more traditional counterparts operate. Lower operating expenses enable distance learning schools to still generate a healthy profit by charging less for an education. A number of online schools offer comprehensive psychology degrees. Some of these online schools provide web-based course packs that can be used instead of textbooks, thus saving students even more money.

If you want a psychology education but also need to watch your pocket book, look into some online psychology schools.
