An Investment Appraisal of Accounting Degrees

There are two major functions for the accountant in any organization, that of financial accounting and of management accounting. Financial accounting has to present historical information about the company to the regulatory bodies, to be published to investors and to the public at large. This information has to be both relevant and reliable - the state of the organization should be truthfully represented in the information. As we have seen from recent corporate governance scandals in companies such as Enron, it can be difficult to be sure that this function is carried out well.

Internal Accounting Career

Management accounting takes the historical accounting information and uses it as a basis to forecast and monitor the results of business planning. This is a highly skilled and very powerful function within the organization, as it is the management accountant who is responsible for making sure that the company is profitable, and who should be able to spot divergence from the business plan, alerting the organization at the earliest stage and help to correct any adverse results.

Your accounting career is in essence one of the major controls over the path that your organization takes, and you are responsible for internal and external information about most of the functions in your organization. The responsibilities are large, but the rewards can correspond with these responsibilities.

Why Not Study an Online Accounting Degree?

In order to be able to handle these responsibilities, your accounting education is rigorous. An accounting degree takes time to complete, and even after you have gained it, you will need to take accounting institution examinations. Many people work in their accounting career and take an online accounting degree, allowing them to work and study at the same time. Online accounting degrees give you the added benefit of learning and applying this learning at the same time.
