You may think that you should shy away from a liberal arts education in favor of more "secure" or "practical" majors, such as business or engineering. After all, there are definite career paths and niches in the employment market for graduates with business and engineering degrees, right? But earning a liberal arts degree doesn't mean that you won't find meaningful employment in the professional world. In fact, many educators think that that a liberal arts degree is the best preparation for a career.

A liberal arts degree provides you with training in a variety of disciplines in preparation for employment in many areas. Although degrees in English, history, and foreign languages may not have obvious career paths in the employment world, they are extremely marketable with employers. A liberal arts degree can prepare you for careers in public relations, purchasing, sales, marketing, consulting, advertising, government, journalism, or teaching. Liberal arts is also an excellent pre-professional degree for medicine, law, business, and university-focused research and teaching.

With an array of disciplines to choose from, your main goal as a liberal arts major is to focus on your interests and target those areas where the opportunities exist. For example, due to the intense domestic and global competition in consumer products and services, you may find a great deal of success in these employment fields.
