In the past two decades, the unparalleled global media leader and philanthropist has changed the world for the better. With an online degree in communication and media, you can emulate this media guru! Here's how Oprah got her start.

O, A Media Headstart

The seeds of success were planted early in Oprah's life. From a high school gig at WVOL radio in Nashville, to WJZ-TV in Baltimore, to co-host of Baltimore's local talk show, People Are Talking, she knew what it took to get the experience she needed to hit it big. In 1984, Oprah moved to Chicago to host the morning talk show, AM Chicago. Due to incredible ratings, the show expanded to an hour and was renamed The Oprah Winfrey Show. The rest is history.

Everything She Touches Turns to G"O"ld

The Emmy award-winning The Oprah Winfrey Show is the highest-rated talk show in syndication history and seen by an estimated 48 million viewer a week in the US and is broadcast internationally in 126 countries.

  • Her book-of-the-month club consistently raises books from obscurity to national bestsellers
  • O, The Oprah Magazine, which has become one of today's leading women's lifestyle media publications with a circulation of 2.3 million readers a month

Giving Back - Oprah's Philanthropy

One of Oprah's mottos is "education is the door to freedom." Her philanthropic organizations include:

  • The Oprah Winfrey Foundation which donates millions to provide a better education to students with merit but no means.
  • The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation which has contributed more than $40 million toward creating the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls-South Africa.
  • Oprah's Angel Network which has raised more than $50 million for non-profit organizations solely from audience donations.
