It's no secret that regular computer use has become an ordinary part of modern living, but you did you know that with this new technology come serious health risks?

Using the computer can be detrimental to your health. With a bit of knowledge, however, you can help prevent computer related injuries to yourself and others.

Computer-related Musculoskeletal Problems

There are a number of computer-related health problems you should be aware of and prevent. Among these:

  • Using the wrong chair or just sitting improperly can create sore muscles, stiffness, headache, and backache. Make sure your feet rest flat on the floor and that you take frequent breaks to walk and stretch.
  • Your muscles and tendons can become inflamed when you use the computer for long periods of time. The infamous carpal tunnel is an example of this type of injury. To prevent harm created by overuse, type lightly. Use your whole arm when using the mouse, and keep the mouse as close as possible to the keyboard.

Computer-related Radiation Exposure

A laptop hooked up to wireless internet emits radiation. The radiation levels drop off quickly after the first few centimetres, but if the computer rests on your lap, you're getting the same dose of radiation as if you were using a mobile phone. That's bad news, as some consumers claim a link between mobile phones and many ailments, ranging from headaches to cancer.

A Computer Science Degree A Healthy Option

Used heedlessly, computers can cause problems. But they can also reap you great benefits, especially if you're truly interested in them. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor, with a computer science degree, you can enjoy a career with faster than average job growth and average salaries of over $85,000.

With the rise of online study, it's never been easier to get your computer science degree. More colleges and universities than ever are offering online degree programs, which allow you to get your degree at your own pace and from the comfort of your own PC. Online study is great. Just be sure to leave your laptop off your lap.
