The Live 8 Concerts

What do Elton John, Madonna, REM, Pink Floyd, and Motley Crue all have in common besides being musicians? They all took part in the historic Live 8 Concerts to help raise awareness of the growing epidemic of AIDS and abject poverty that affects millions of Africans.

In a clever word play on the G8 Summit, Live 8 is the name given to a series of concerts across Europe, Africa, and America aimed at throwing a spotlight on the plight of Africans who are dying by the millions of AIDS and poverty related illnesses. The need for comfort, compassion, and counseling in these areas is tremendous. In a rare publicity move, the concert organizers did not ask the public for monetary contributions. Instead, they were after the names of supporters to be added to a list to be given to world leaders. As organizer Bob Geldof explained, We dont want your money, we want your voice.

Details of the Live 8 Concerts:

  • The Long Walk to Justice. This is the symbolic journey of millions of people across the world to show the G8 leaders that the world is watching and waiting for progress in this struggle.
  • Supportive Counseling. Another major goal of these concerts is to provide focused counseling for the victims including training on how they can protect themselves from the AIDS epidemic.
  • Record Audiences. Organizers say that an estimated 3 billion people watched these incredible concerts and many of those showed their support.
