Controversy Surround Rising Special Education Budgets

There is an ongoing debate about the extent to which children with special needs are given priority in the public school system. By most accounts, special education departmental costs within the public schools rise much faster than other departments, and make up a disproportionate amount of a school's entire operating budget. It is easy to see why this is the case, children with special needs require more individual attention than mainstream kids, and thus the special education teacher/student ratio tends to be quite small. Some parents, especially those with gifted children, argue that too much time and money is spent on kids with special needs instead of gifted children, who statistically contribute more to society in the long run. Opponents to this argument claim that gifted children don't need as much help, and will most likely become successful with a minimum of special attention.

While this argument is hashed out around the country, special education budgets continue to rise. On the bright side, increasing special education budgets translates into more special education jobs. Those currently getting special education teaching degrees have a lot to look forward to upon graduation. Finding a special education job has almost never been easier.
