Even in the college classroom, you'll yourself find confronted by classroom management issues. Keep a positive attitude toward your students, and most of problems are easy enough to deal with.

  1. Repeated Tardiness: Make your procedures very clear upfront, either through a discussion on the first day or on your syllabus.
  2. Leaving Class Too Early:��Don't assume any disrespect. A student may have work or some problem.
  3. Snoozing in Class:��Try asking students if they are alright. Genuine concern can create appreciation, so sick or tired students make a special effort to stay awake.
  4. Space-casing:��Ask a student after class what's going on. Express concern. Create an ally.
  5. Verbal or Physical Intimidation:��You shouldn't deal with this alone. Ask for professional help immediately.
  6. Disruption with Gum, Food, Pagers, Cellphone:��Institute some consequences for this early on. But allow students at least one mistake.
  7. Not Talking:��Encourage participation by instituting a participation. Be sure to praise all efforts.
  8. Talking:��If students are talking over you, stop talking and wait for them to notice. Usually the embarrassment will do the trick.
  9. Flirting or Sexual Innuendo:��Discuss this with your department chair before approaching your student. But act quickly and without judgment-an email will do.
  10. Copying:��Keep an open mind when addressing the question of whether work has been copied or not. Sometimes students just don't understand what they've done.
