Dental Hygienists Helping Kids and Their Profession

Tooth decay among youngsters is rising and the dental profession is experiencing a labor shortage. One dental hygienist in Maine is addressing both of these problems as a presenter in a unique school program.

The Kennebec Journal in Maine recently released an article that put a spotlight on the work of Tracy Jowett, a dental hygienist in the area. Tracy visits approximately 200 students each year ranging from kindergarten to the eighth grade. During her visits, she tries to get students interested in the dental profession while showing them the negative effects of tooth decay. She belongs to an organization called Saving Smiles, and is currently the only dental hygienist among the many dental professionals in the group.

Earn a Dental Hygienist Associate's Degree

Tracy's dedication to her profession and the dental health of her community is admirable. If you are concerned about dental health and are interested in possibly becoming a dental hygienist, you should look into some dental hygienist associate degree programs in your area. There are over 200 accredited dental hygienist schools in the country, and most of them offer associate's degree programs that can be completed in a few years. Some offer longer term bachelor's or graduate degree programs. These degree programs prepare students for written and clinical licensure examinations required by every state.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the demand for dental hygienists is going to skyrocket over the next few years, due mainly to current shortages and a projected increase in dental care needs. This increase in demand will probably result in higher wages for incoming dental hygienists.

Associate Degree Graduates Can Tap Into Growing Profession

If you want to tap into a career when salaries are on the rise, enroll in a dental hygienist associate degree program today and in a few years, you'll be able to hit the ground running.
