There are seemingly very few female animators in the industry. The ratio of women to men is still small, but that doesn't mean that times aren't changing. Nowadays, more and more women are becoming professional animators. Ladies, get your animation degree and start tipping the gender numbers!
Animation Information: The Gender Myth
Gini, a talented animation artist for Pixar, recognizes the gender gap in the animation field, but doesn't buy into it. She says, "I remember someone advising me that [the animation field] was 'such a man's world, you have to elbow your way in.' But for me, what got me through was that I wanted to animate and keep learning. My experience at Pixar was that if you do good work, you are recognized. I haven't had to elbow my way into anything here."
Most animation companies, like Pixar, look for a good collaborative environment with talented artists no matter what the gender, so there's no need to be intimidated.
Developing a New Trend
There are a lot of women in animation and the number has been rising. One interesting observation by Linda Simensky, Director of Programming at the Cartoon Network, is that many men enter the industry by first studying animation in school, and then securing jobs in the animation field. She notes that some women take that path as well, but the majority of women, in her experience, end up in the field without initially earning an animation degree. It would be ideal for more women to initially earn an animation degree and develop their careers from the get-go.
An Online Degree in Animation
No need to shy away from the commitment of an animation degree. An online degree, with its accommodating schedules, is perfect for the woman who is on-the-go or Moms with family obligations. If you don't want to commit to a classroom education, try an online degree in animation and help balance the male-female ratios.
