Photography Degrees: Wedding Photographers Take the Cake

Most of us love the cheery spectacle of a wedding. Few take a closer look at the bigday's events than a wedding photographer.

According to Weddings In Style, wedding photography has recently undergone radical changes. Rather than the formal, posed photographs in front of the altar of old, the wedding pictures of today capture the wedding party in action. They tell the story of the event as it unfolds.

Wedding Photography Trends

More than ever, wedding photographers work with the bride and groom from start to finish. Before the ceremony has even begun, they capture shots of the wedding party as they dress, and at the reception they record the family dance moves. They also work at secondary functions, like rehearsal dinners, showers, and wedding breakfasts. In this new era, wedding photographers must have not only technical skills, but must get along well with people, note the important moments, and improvise.

The employment trend is for wedding photographers to work from their own studios. To make this work, you will need technical proficiency, basic composition knowledge, and business acumen. Also necessary is familiarity with the computer software programs and applications that allow you to work with images.

Shooting for a Photography Degree

Earning a photography degree is the first step toward a career in wedding photography. Many universities and colleges offer degrees in photography that provide you with the full variety of neceassary skills. With a college degree in the field, you stand a better chance of reaching the higher-end of the photographer's pay scale, which the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics puts at $54,000. Many colleges also offer opportunities to perform valuable internships. If you would like to record wedding memories, a degree in photography might form a match made in Heaven.
