Linux/Unix - Overview

For the one percent of you that don't know this already (don't worry, you'll catch up quickly) Linux and Unix are the names of two computer operating systems. One of the main differences between the two is that Unix is a proprietary system, while Linux can be used for free by anyone.

Typically, large companies will run all of their software on Linux, Unix, or Windows NT - another industrial strength system. If you want to work in a company's information technology (IT) department, there is a good chance that you will have to take a certification course that teaches you how to work with one of these operating systems.

Kaplan University's accredited online degree programs allow you to earn the degree you need and advance your career without missing a day of work.

Learn Linux/Unix Programming Skills Online

Luckily, you don't have to alter your life that much to become adept at programming in Linux or Unix. Today, there are online and distance learning programs that enable people to become certified from the comforts of their own homes.

If you think about it, an online certification program in this field generally makes more sense than earning a certification in a traditional classroom. Most of your homework will be done on your computer, and this work is not the type that demands a whole lot of discussion or classmate interaction.

If you're stuck on a problem, you can either shoot your instructor an email or instant message, and he/she will get back to you with an answer.

Why will a Linux/Unix Certification Help You?

These days, with so many people looking for IT jobs, employers don't want to spend months training new hires. IT jobs generally don't differ a lot from company to company, meaning that certain skills are easily transferable.

Knowing how to work with Linux or Unix is one of these transferable skills. If you can list a Linux/Unix certification on your resume, then you are essentially telling a potential employer that you can be of use to them on your first day of work without any additional training. In other words, with a certification in Linux or Unix, you have a much better chance of getting that IT job that you want.

So there you go. Put the joystick down and start looking into online Linux/Unix certification programs to jumpstart your IT career.
